Equity premium and monetary policy in a model with limited asset market participation

چکیده

We develop a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model to examine how monetary policy shocks affect income inequality and the equity premium. The features Ricardian non-Ricardian households shows that tightening causes an endogenous redistribution of from non-Ricardians Ricardians. Ricardians’ consumption comoves more strongly with asset returns, giving rise high premia. extend our several frictions estimate it generalized method moments using US macroeconomic financial data 1960 2007. find estimated jointly matches bond complement theoretical vector autoregression estimations show increases

Commentary: Monetary Policy and Asset Market Volatility

Bernanke and Gertler offer an excellent paper on guidelines for monetary policy. Much is to be learned, and when they get close to the key issue: “Should the Fed crash asset market bubbles?” Their firm “no”—model and simulation-based—offers great comfort to received wisdom. I have learned a lot from the paper and their broader research effort (see Clarida, Gali, and Gertler (1999) and the refer...

Model Uncertainty, Limited Market Participation, and Asset Prices

We demonstrate that limited market participation can arise endogenously in the presence of model uncertainty. Our model generates novel predictions on the relation between limited market participation, the equity premium, and the diversification discount. When the dispersion in investors’ model uncertainty is small, full market participation prevails in equilibrium. In this case, the equity pre...

Search, Limited Participation, and Monetary Policy

A model is developed that employs recent developments in the literature on search models of money to capture the distributional effects of monetary policy in a tractable way. Deterministic and stochastic versions of the model are studied. Money is not neutral, and these nonneutralities persist, whether or not the change in the money supply is anticipated or unanticipated. At the optimum, moneta...

Limited asset markets participation, monetary policy and (inverted) aggregate demand logic

This paper incorporates limited asset markets participation in dynamic general equilibrium and develops a simple analytical framework for monetary policy analysis. Aggregate dynamics and stability properties of an otherwise standard business cycle model depend nonlinearly on the degree of asset market participation. While ‘moderate’ participation rates strengthen the role of monetary policy, lo...

The Equity Premium in Brock’s Asset Pricing Model ?

In this paper we combine dynamic programming methods with projection methods for solving stochastic growth models. As an application of these methods, we solve Brock’s asset pricing model with a variety of parameterizations. We focused on finding parameterizations that result in an equity premium that is high relative to the variation in consumption. We show (both analytically and numerically) ...
